Moderate Earthquakes in Northern India


New Delhi, April 4 (IANS) The tremors were felt in northern India, including the country's capital, Chandigarh and Shimla, after a magnitude 5.7 earthquake centered on the border between India and Nepal last week. There were no reports of casualties or damage.

According to RS Dattatreya, director of seismology, the tremors were felt at 17:02

"The epicenter was on the border between India and Nepal. The latitude of 29.6 degrees north and longitude was 80.8 degrees east," said Dattatreya.

"It was a moderate earthquake," he added.

There were no reports of damage from the earthquake.

"The tremors were also felt in the city of Shimla," said Met Office director, Manmohan Singh told IANS in the capital of Himachal Pradesh.

Chandigarh and surrounding villages in Haryana and Punjab, also reported tremors.

"In this region, which was relatively mild, and so far no reports of damage and casualties have come from Punjab and Haryana, an official said in Chandigarh.

However, there was panic in some areas with people at the top residential blocks floorsof the stairs.

Said Rajiv Mathur, an advertising professional who was at his job in building three-story office in New Delhi: "I was in the middle of a job, when suddenly the windows started rattling. Before I realized what was happening, my friends began to scream it was an earthquake and stayed down "the stairs.

Shalini Sharma, another resident of New Delhi, said: "I felt the tremors and immediately left the house with my daughter. Fortunately, there was very strong and did not last long."

Chandigarh housewife Bhanu Kehar also left home. "I live on the third floor and I was in the kitchen when I felt the pulling. We are scared and immediately ran downstairs," he told IANS.

However, there were many who felt the tremors.

"I was walking back home when the earthquake is supposed to have happened, but I did not feel anything," said Sharmistha Das, a student of Delhi.
